In 2008-2009 St. Theresa School implemented a Character Education program. This is a PreK-8th grade curriculum highlighting the Six Pillars of Character; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
The goal is to provide a framework for ethical living.
2 students from each class are nominated and elected each
month for representing that month’s character trait.
(September was Respect, October is Caring, and
November will be Citizenship). These students comprise
the Character Council, which is an honor and a responsibility. Character Council members are called upon
to help present to the early childhood students, and mentor
older students. The students and teachers have responded enthusiastically to this approach which accentuates the positive, rather than focus on negative behavior.
Personal Safety: Every year students are taught personal
safety through our W.H.O. (We Help Ourselves) program
puppet shows, and through group discussions for more mature students. Involvement and input of parents are always welcome
as we work together to support the healthy development of St. Theresa’s students.
Internet Safety is addressed through special presentations by
the FBI and reinforced in guidance classes.
Positive Discipline is another approach being used to integrate guidance into the classroom. Beginning in PreK-3 through
4th grade and eventually through Junior High, our teachers are practicing a new approach to resolving issues between students. This method involves student class meetings and is
child centered, rather than adult centered.
